The “6600″ as everyone called it was the world’s fastest computer from 1965 to 1969, which I enjoyed as my Ph.D. research computer. The CDC 6600 Linpack benchmark was 1 megaflops. If Jack Dongarra’s estimate is correct, the iPad 2 Linpack result for both cores will be 1.5 to 1.65 gigaflops — roughly 1,500 times faster than the world’s fastest 1969 supercomputer.
And the iPad 2 is also orders of magnitude easier to program than the 6600. Which would you rather have?
