What do you suggest in choosing a candidate?

A commenter asked that question — I replied:

What the candidates say in speeches is usually audience-tailored. So, go to their website to study their proposed policies. If you think the candidate is honest, pick the candidate with the best policies — i.e., you are confident they will really invest their political capital in promoting the policies you are studying. If you don’t think s/he is honest keep looking.

Examine their voting records carefully — especially to see if their record is consistent with their current posturing. See this post for U.S. presidential candidate voting records. And this post for Free trade votes by U.S. presidential candidates.

FWIW, we never watch/listen to politician speeches - we read the transcripts. That insulates you to a degree from their rhetorical skills - making it easier to focus on the substance.
