Life lessons from Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture”

It’s difficult to contribute anything new to the discussion around Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture” at Carnegie Mellon University — either the lecture video available at YouTube or Randy’s new book, also available as an audiobook at iTunes or from Audible.

Listening to the lecture this weekend, I noted just a few of Randy’s points I wanted to remember:

° Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.

° Never lose the child-like wonder.

° Be good at something; it makes you valuable.

° Don’t bail; the best gold is at the bottom of barrels of crap

° Get a feedback loop; and listen to it [Andy van Dam]

° Show gratitude [took whole team to disney land]

° Don’t complain; just work harder

° Work hard… [”I got tenure a year early, junior faculty asked ‘what’s your secret?’ I said call my office any Friday night at 10pm I’ll tell you”]

° Find the best in everybody; no matter how you have to wait for them to show it

° Be prepared: “luck” is where preparation meets opportunity
