Life lessons from Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture”, part 2

“I’ve experienced a deathbed conversion,” he said, smiling. “I just bought a Macintosh.”

I just found Jeffrey Zaslow’s column on Randy’s “Last Lecture” — which reminded me of this quote from the beginning of the lecture.

Give Randy Pausch a Virtual Visit since we all can’t fit in his living room, and he’s given us so much of himself.

Date and Time: Monday, May 5; 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight Time (Virginia, USA). Spread this around; blog it, text it, translate it (here are some international time guides: Melbourne- Mon 2:00 AM; Mexico City- Sun 11:00 AM; Paris- Sun 6:00 PM; Johannesburg- Sun 6:00 PM; Beijing- Midnight Sun-Mon; London- Sun 5:00 PM).

So no matter where you are, as close as you can to 12 noon EDT, sing, hum or just think it:

“Sing” (Sing A Song)- from Sesame Street (written by Joe Raposo)

    Sing, Sing a song.
Sing out loud, Sing out strong.
Sing of good things, not bad.
    Sing of happy, not sad.
    Sing, Sing a song.
Make it simple, To last your whole life long.
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough, For anyone else to hear.
    Sing, Sing a song.

We can do it and he deserves it: Knowing just when we’re all thinking of him..

steve, hello from b.c. canada…i am also grateful for my life, parents & childhood, poor but lots of fun & life lessons along with the sorrows…i’d like to think that i was as grateful before i broke my back but truthfully, it was a chance to clear a cluttered cupboard of stuff that didn’t matter, certainly not a totally negative experience…as a school board trustee, i am giving the grad’08 address & i’m planning to mention your assessment of life in terms of achieving childhood dreams…thnx for sharing your truth…as i live through each day in debilitating chronic pain, sometimes i wish i could “go to sleep forever”, however, most days my dream of writing about my parents life keeps me going & on a day to day level, working with kids keeps me busy…i think of you often, good on ya…dina.

How inspiring Randy Pausch is! If you liked “The Last Lecture”, another fantastic memoir I just read and highly recommend is “My Stroke of Insight” by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. Her TEDTalk video (ted.com) has been seen as many times as The Last Lecture I think, and Oprah did 4 shows on her book, so there are a lot of similarities. In My Stroke of Insight, there’s a happy ending though. It’s an incredible story! I hear they’re making it into a movie.

Thanks - yes we all need to recommend the Jill Bolte Taylor TED talk to our friends. Myself I’d rather skip the stroke — but if I have to experience a stroke, I hope I’ll be up her standard.
