Zedillo: Shooting Ourselves in the Food

Ernesto Zedillo, director, Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, and former president of Mexico has more commentary on cost of politicians. I liked the title of his Forbes piece, in a class with “liquid pork” [ethanol], and “biofools” [ethanol].

I do wish that Zedillo had linked to a careful study demonstrating what percent of food price increases should be attributed to the food-as-fuel activities. We know there is an impact, but not how significant.

I remain hopeful for new technology biofuel contributions with sensible feedstocks such as municipal and agricultural waste, switchgrass or engineered algae.

Just a reminder, McCain said if elected he would veto the recently passed US farm bill, while Obama praised it. Similarly, McCain would eliminate ethanol subsidies vs. Obama who supports the subsidies and tariffs. “Pork” is such an appropriate term for the wealth transfers from taxpayers to “farmers”.
